Family Counseling
The family unit is a life force. When stability in the family is threatened, relationships can become strained and family members' foundations can be shaken. When family members take on unhealthy roles, chaos can erupt. Each family member is a key player in the family, no matter the age, and each voice is important. Whether you're dealing with a teenager in crisis, communication issues, or everyday family problems, counseling can be a great resource. Family counseling brings the family together to work on issues in a safe setting.

Keys to Successful Family Counseling

Family counseling is most successful when all family members (who are old enough to participate in counseling ) can engage in the counseling process. Of course, there are some issues that need only be addressed by mature family members. When each family member makes a commitment to be an active participant in the family sessions, progress is more likely. Safety in the counseling office is of utmost importance in making family counseling succeed. Therefore, "ground rules" will be established during the first session related to how family members interact with one another in session. For example, all family members must show respect for one another in how they speak to one another and treat one another in session. A primary task of the counselor in family counseling is to facilitate open, honest communication between family members. Although this can be uncomfortable at times, the more practice family members have in session, the easier it becomes to "practice" outside of session. Don't be surprised if the family is assigned homework to report back on in the next session!
