Individual Counseling
Counseling is a collaborative effort. The counselor and client work together to identify issues that need to be addressed, counseling goals, and methods to reach these goals. Lori facilitates counseling from a systems therapy framework and also offers Christian counseling, while respecting each client for who he/she is. Lori works with preteens ages 11-12, teenagers, and adults.
When Counseling Is Needed
When life becomes overwhelming, it helps to have someone unbiased to talk to in order to find some direction and peace. You may be dealing with a trauma or the aftermath of a trauma. You may even be having thoughts of self-harm or harm to others and counseling needs to take place in order to establish emotional stability and safety. The severity of these thoughts will determine whether counseling needs to take place in an outpatient or inpatient setting.
Counseling, however, does not always have to be crisis-oriented. Sometimes counseling is needed to help resolve relationship or family issues. Individuals needing to learn coping skills or self-care can also benefit from counseling. Regardless of the issue one is facing, an empathic counselor can be of valuable assistance. Remember, there is nothing wrong with asking for help. It is the first step to healing.
Details About Counseling Sessions
Individual counseling sessions last 50 minutes. An initial assessment is completed in order to determine the specific issues that need to be addressed and the best way to address those issues. The number of sessions needed varies depending on the person and the issue. The counselor and client will work together to establish goals for counseling. Clients are encouraged to give their counselor feedback about the counseling process and communicate their needs and concerns throughout the duration of counseling. A termination session is strongly recommended prior to discontinuing counseling, in order to assess progress made, discharge needs, and to give closure to the therapeutic relationship.
